Foraging personalities modify effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity

چکیده

Habitat loss undeniably poses a substantial threat to biodiversity, but whether fragmentation per se drives the of species is still widely debated. While negative consequences from are often anticipated, many empirical studies report positive effects. However, intrinsic mechanisms governing species' persistence in fragmented landscapes not yet understood. In this study we investigated consistent personality-dependent differences foraging behavior among individuals as possible mechanism underlying discrepancy reported We devised mechanistic individual-based model simulating home range competitive small mammal community based on availability shared resource. Thereby, an individual's risk-taking dictates its decisions at risky habitat edges, inherent property se. Our simulations show that while potentially further contributing reconcile debate. The first scenario considering risk-seeking communities showed neutral response towards fragmentation, second featuring risk-avoiding confirmed effects fragmentation. Notably, third scenario, behaviorally diverse including and individuals, demonstrated influence biodiversity. Intraspecific could also enhance temporal coexistence (coviability) threatened by ongoing loss. highlights importance recognizing behavioral composition populations for estimating effects, because can coping abilities animal light

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on Biodiversity

■ Abstract The literature on effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity is huge. It is also very diverse, with different authors measuring fragmentation in different ways and, as a consequence, drawing different conclusions regarding both the magnitude and direction of its effects. Habitat fragmentation is usually defined as a landscape-scale process involving both habitat loss and the br...

Habitat fragmentation and biodiversity collapse in neutral communities

Models of habitat fragmentation have mainly explored the effects on a few-species ecologies or on a hierarchical community of competitors. These models reveal that, under different conditions, ecosystem response can involve sharp changes when some given thresholds are reached. However, perturbations, recruitment limitation and other causes may prevent competitive hierarchies from actually opera...

The Effects of Habitat Fragmentation and Connectivity on Plant Disease

JOHNSON, BRENDA LYNN. The Effects of Habitat Fragmentation and Connectivity on Plant Disease. (Under the direction of Nick M. Haddad.) Within a large-scale habitat corridor experiment, I performed both experimental and observational studies to determine the effects of habitat fragmentation, habitat edge, and patch connectivity on the movement and incidence of fungal plant diseases. Increased sp...
